photo taken with a fir infrared at night plugged in my i phone 14
photo 1 very full beehive ready for a split ,
# 2 photo with 1" insulation
# 3 they are all dead !
I was going to split my beehive the reason I use 2 deep and 3 to 4 super
colony was very strong ,
then in a span of a week all dead frozen in the frame or in the position of what they were doing , kind like in Pompei , not much varroa to speak of . lot of honey as food reserve .
it as late fall no reason for anyone nearby to spray for anything
not much varroa to speak off
no foul brood ran the test {expensive} milk was negative .
my hives are all insulated , this year I will try another insulation an over kill 3" rigid foam that I will enclose in marine plywood {I was lucky the first time with inexpensive plywood ,not so much this time
] draw back FYI you need to keep an eye for wax moth , it is a perfect nursery.

I had phone 0lyg-in too. Crud. I then read the fine print. It detects surface heat but doesn't penetrate.  I got false readings and returned it.
My buddies that do extractions like Flir C5. Not cheap but quality n dependable. Penetrates 2x6, stucco, wllboard, some trees.

There are infra-red cameras,
and there are devices you can plug into your phone to make it an infra-red camera.
My spouse got me an "Infisense Technology P2 Pro"
Like a couple of other brands, it depends on an App you download onto your phone

the sensor part is about 1 inch square by half an inch thick.
I need to take the phone out of the protective case in order to plug it all the way into the phone.
I have taken picture of hives with it. It clearly shows the warm spots,
and the benefit of insulating the top of the hive  to reduce heat loss in winter.
The app tags locations on the image with the temperature for reference.

Read reviews. Good luck

The bees are either snooping around some gaps at the top of the windows, or
already moved in.  An assessment is needed.   Is there a hot-spot
inside? Are they bringing in pollen?
