I had phone 0lyg-in too. Crud. I then read the fine print. It detects surface heat but doesn't penetrate.  I got false readings and returned it.
My buddies that do extractions like Flir C5. Not cheap but quality n dependable. Penetrates 2x6, stucco, wllboard, some trees.

the sensor part is about 1 inch square by half an inch thick. 
I need to take the phone out of the protective case in order to plug it all the way into the phone.
I have taken picture of hives with it. It clearly shows the warm spots,
and the benefit of insulating the top of the hive  to reduce heat loss in winter.
The app tags locations on the image with the temperature for reference.
