Re: Pleasanton swarm off Bernal - How many bees can you get in a box is kinda the wrong question

The rule of thumb is a football size swarm is about 3 pounds of bees is about the number of bees in a Package.

A deep box with 10 drawn frames can accommodate about 15,000 or 20,000 bees  - 4-1/2 lb to 6 lb

You can get about  that many bees in a Nuc box if the frames are foundationless or undrawnfoundations.   In a pinch.

So if the swarm is too big for the box,  the question is,  how many frames do I need to modify to fit the bees in it.

Medium frames in a deep box is another way to accommodate a bigger swarm.

Half the frames in my catch-box are usually foundationless or short frames.
Lots more bees get to be close to the queen.

About 4 frames or less why?

The swarm you posted is huge and I’m wondering how many 10 frame boxes would you need to collect that swarm?
