Bumblebee mitigation needed in Alameda. On the west end, I think

Bumblebees often take over gopher holes when they nest.
Nests in the ground are the usual thing.

One of the Vector Control field people got called out to a home in Alameda
where the bumblebee entrance hole is right next to the front sidewalk.
The entrance tunnel extends under the concrete.
So getting the nest out seems to be impossible.

I suggested putting plywood between the sidewalk and the entrance hole to control flight paths.
I also suggested using drain-pipe or perhaps even downspout pipe
to extend the entrance up above the level where the bumbles flying in and out would bother the homeowner.
(The home owner is very, very afraid of bees, btw)
(if the bumbles weren't freaking the home owner out, things could be left alone, perhaps.)

If you have a better idea, and wanna get involved with helping out the bumblebees, please contact Flora 510 567 6825. She's the person from VC who was sent out on this call.
Better perhaps if you live in Alameda compared to me here in east Oakland.

If you have a lot of experience with bumblebees, or know someone who can assist,
please pick up the phone.
I only know enough about them to get myself into trouble.

If you do get involved and are able to help, please share the story with us.

Thanks

Jerry
