Nathaniel and I met with Ariel. They just bought the house and the sellers disclosed that there were bees in the tree and estimated that they were there for about twenty years. They are entering from a hole near the bottom of the tree trunk that is about two inches from a concrete retaining wall. I told her that if someone could get the bees out with something like a bee vacuum, more bees will probably move in because there will be dark comb and honey in the tree. She asked about sealing the hole after getting the bees out and I said she might need to talk to a specialist about that. I was not sure that a beekeeper could advise her on that. They really like the tree and do not want to sacrifice it to get rid of the bees.
We chatted for a while and she and her husband now understand that this is not an emergency because the tree is to the far right of their yard, far from where their kids are likely to play. (The beeline is over a very large bed of agapanthus.). They understand that they can take time to decide how to proceed, but would appreciate hearing from someone who does extractions from bee trees. (Ariel was quoted $800 over the phone from someone she found online and thought that was high, but now understands that this is a complicated issue.)
