YJs have fatter antennae - sometimes that's enough for an ID.
Sometimes too much yellow to be a honey bee.
Honey bees never nest in soil. "bees" going into entrances in retaining walls are generally YJs.
Honey bees Do nest in cinder-block walls if they can find a way into the core

I second Claire - from previous experience wasp and YJ darts more. A few honeybees tend to land/rest at entrance before entering whereas YJ go right in.

The way their flying looks a lot like wasps to me.

Anish in Fremont called as there are insects flying in and out of an area in his backyard. It is unclear if they are coming in and out of a stucco wall or if they are flying out of the ground in the soil in front of the stucco wall. He sent a video and I'm not 100% sure. Seems like more traffic than a yellow jacket nest but they're moving too fast for me to really get a read on whether they're wasps versus bees. They seem to fly more like wasps IMO but the pest control folks told him they're bees. I'm not convinced. Anyway, he is looking for help because his dad got stung twice. If this is an extraction he knows there will be a cost.
