Re: Large Alameda Swarm Under Eves Near Main Street

I want to follow up with a report from this swarm capture.  Please do not respond here, but keep it in mind.

Maruf and I hustled out to the old navy base in Alameda to collect the swarm that had been reportedly hanging out under the eves.  Since the caller had said that the cluster of bees had been there for a week (even if it was just a few days), I felt hopeful that they had not moved into the building.

I brought a 20 foot ladder and a bee vac (maiden voyage for it).  The ladder was about 6 inches too short, but Maruf was able to find a couple of cinder blocks to put the ladder on (NOT OSHA approved ladder technique!).  After about 4 minutes, almost all the bees had been vacuumed up.  The woman living directly below where the bees were was very grateful.  We dumped the bees into a 10 frame box, waited for them to settle, and were on our way.  I did go back up and vacuum up the last few bees and remove the piece of comb they had built.

While it is true that bees under the eves or bee on the side of a building often means that they are getting ready to move in, this is not always the case.  Please still answer these calls if you are able.

Let’s rock this.  Might be a strike out, but might be a surprise.

According to the caller, the bees have been there ALL WEEK.  Seems like they are stying put on the outside of the house.

Would love to get someone out there.

Thanks,

Gabriel

They likely have moved into those air vents with 1/4" holes in the wire, into the building.
