I could do either! Daisy showed me the rubber band technique on a very small hive we extracted last week(concerned they wont make it thru winter so I'm looking for a small one to combine).  

Can't say that I fully know what I'm doing from just one extraction so I'm happy to learn from more experienced people too.  :)
