Did you have a used brood frame in the bucket? Sometimes that will encourage them to stay.

I collected the swarm in the morning easily enough with a breakdown for the home owner. She texted me in the afternoon letting me know that the bees all seemed to be in the bucket and not on the tree. My plan was to go back after dark to collect the bucket. 

When I arrived, the bees weren't in the bucket or on the tree. In hindsight, because they'd been there since Friday, the risk of them finding a spot was high and I should have taken the bees initially without the stragglers. In any case, lesson learned - hopefully for everyone else as well!
