Hey Folks,
This almost turned out to be the largest swarm I'd caught on my own. Maybe a watermelon and a basketball? I arrived yesterday to find 3 clumps of bees - 1) hanging from the bench seat, 2) piled under the bench on the ground, and 3) about 8' away in a clump scouting the water meter.
I got the hanging clump into the box pretty quick, lots of fanning so I assume there's a queen in there. The bottom clump was starting to march in. I left the water meter alone thinking they might get with the program once they realized where the queen was... I came back well after dark and found they still appeared to be marching in and the clump by the water meter hadn't budged.
I spoke with the caller who was very sweet and suggested I come back in the morning. (They reported having a popular garden area and have had several swarms in their garden in the past). My initial hope was with more time they'd get in.
When I came back in the morning however there was a clear separation between those that were in the box and the two clumps not going in. Pam came to the rescue and brought more equipment - we had 3 boxes total. 1) that I gathered the day before, 2) the ground clump which also had significant fanning going on once we got most of it into a box, and 3) the water meter clump which easily marched into Pam's box once we found their dead queen and put her in pheromones likely still wafting.
Pam is going back tonight - Hopefully she'll report back success! Thank you again beekeepers for the opportunity to learn. I've found the catches I do with other ACBA members (so far Allen, Gabriel and Pam) to be highly fun and educational!
Thank you,Penny415-378-1324

Subject: Re: [ACBA Swarmlist] Swarm - Oakland near e27 and coolidgeI’ve had a lot of folks call, but these bees have a Home now. Thanks everyone. About 50% the way in the box now but waiting for the rest to go in still. This one was a bit more complicated… 1/2 on the bench 1/2 on the ground and a pile 5’ away on the water hole. i’ll send pictures once I’m done
